HAVI and AddVolt join forces to eliminate diesel and CO2 emissions by electrifying transport refrigeration unit

2020-01-02 –  AddVolt’s Plug-in Electric system has been working non-stop on HAVI Portugal fleet, a well-known global logistics company. This step was taken following up on HAVI’s commitment to carry out its activity in an efficient and sustainable way. During the distribution in Lisbon city centre, the goods refrigeration is fully assured in electric mode, reducing the noise level, the CO2 emissions, and the impact on city residents.

The Problem

In 2014, HAVI became the first company in Portugal to integrate natural gas trucks in their fleet reducing their carbon footprint. Nevertheless, these trucks’ refrigeration units were still powered by diesel, and it was responsible for 25% of overall truck’s emissions. Understanding this reality, HAVI Portugal decided to change the paradigm of its operation, switching its refrigeration units from diesel to electric. With AddVolt technology, HAVI Portugal became one of the first companies in the world to deliver its fresh goods with zero emissions and low noise, removing diesel in its entirety from their operation. Besides the evident operational savings provided by the lower cost due to usage of natural gas and electrical energy, the real challenge to overcome was the improvement in air quality.

The Innovation

AddVolt’s non-invasive and eco-friendly solution not only put an end to transportation company’s nightmare, allowing sensitive urban distribution but also improves the work conditions of truck drivers, by reducing vehicle noise and minimising cab vibration. AddVolt Plug-in Electric system has 18 kW power rating and uses Lithium-ion batteries that can be charged at any transshipment warehouse in less than 90 min or with energy recovered by brakings and slowdowns. To ensure a service of excellence, AddVolt provides the digital platform “My AddVolt” which is available to clients. Additionally, AddVolt offers support through an international dealer network.

The Results

Since January 2019, more than 6000 litres of diesel had been saved, 16.5 tons of CO2 emissions were avoided, and the noise level lower than 60dB.  Such achievements result from the fact that truck’s refrigeration unit operates in electric mode. These results not only minimise HAVI’s carbon footprint but also reduces the impact of its logistic activity during urban distribution.
